Scholarship programs transform not only the lives of the less privileged beneficiaries and their families but also society as a whole, creating an ever-widening ripple effect of good. The good thing is, more and more private companies have realized this and started rolling out different scholarship programs.
One of them is the Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. (MRSGI). Through Vicsal Foundation, Inc., the philanthropic arm of its parent firm Vicsal Development Company, the VSF Scholarship Program has been granting scholarships since 2007 to qualified public high school students who are academically capable but have no means to pursue college education.
“Our scholarship program is all about the cultivation of future talents, especially the ones who are really struggling financially,” says Marco Gaisano Ang de Leon, president of Vicsal Foundation. “It is all about giving people a better chance to explore their skills and achieve a better life.”
The Foundation receives about a thousand scholarship applicants yearly, concentrated in the Visayas region where MRSGI has its roots. Many scholars who have graduated have found gainful employment in the corporate offices and branch network of Metro Retail Stores.
Here’s how you can apply according to Edukasyon.ph:

Since 2016, MRSGI has also been supporting the Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP) of Caritas Manila. The YSLEP provides for the needs of underprivileged but qualified college students including tuition and school fees, books, school projects, board and lodging, food allowance and transportation expenses, and servant leadership formation.
Caritas Manila relies on Segunda Mana, its social enterprise that collects in-kind donations, for the funding of the YSLEP. Segunda Mana donation boxes are placed in Metro department stores and supermarkets as well as in its corporate offices in Cebu and Manila. Caritas Manila then sells the donations in their charity outlets to convert them into cash that can be added to the scholarship program.
“Aside from the education, we really have to instill in the students their role in the community and how they can be morally upright scholars. It’s not just about providing allowance to finish their courses. The scholars’ well-being is being monitored by our volunteers nationwide,” says Barry Camique, Segunda Mana program director of Caritas Manila.
