Looking for a hippie and cool place to visit this weekend?
Eastwood City welcomes the holiday season with a spectacle of whimsical arts, lights, and music highlighted by giant lighted art sculptures handcrafted by Filipino contemporary artist-designer Leeroy New.
Multidisciplinary artist Leeroy New is a recipient of the 2012 CCP 13 Artist Awards and was an Asian Cultural Council fellow in New York City in 2016. He is known for large-scale public art and immersive installations. He is also the same artist behind the modern art installations in New York, Paris, L.A., Singapore, Japan, Sydney, Taipei, Thailand, and Belgium.
Nestled at the Eastwood Mall Open Park, Leeroy New’s newest masterpiece exclusively created for Eastwood City—”Festive Fungi, Merry Mycelium”—features larger-than-life bioluminescent mushrooms and fungi, reaching as high as seven meters and emitting light of every hue to the tune of modern holiday music.
Inspired by various fantasy and science fiction elements, his giant public art installation is a reimagination of a hybrid world of the natural and industrial, where organic elements take on a new form and start to recapture public space to create an agaric wonderland.
In a conversation with MB Life, the artist says he wants visitors to create their own experience once they visit his newest public installation work.
Meanwhile, the visual feast of neon lights from alien-like mycete and spores are complemented by the curated musical arrangement by film score composer Diego Mapa.
Diego has been an active musician and recording artist since 1997 and is the singer of electro disco-punk band Pedicab. He has produced award-winning musical scores in movies such as Marie Jamora’s “Ang Nawawala” (2012) and Avid Liongoren’s “Saving Sally” (2016).
The musical score is a mix of his modern interpretation of traditional Christmas songs and original compositions called the “Eastwood Suite.” Infusing relatable genres from alternative rock, electronic, and orchestral music, Mapa’s mix brings a magical vibe with occasional heartwarming peaks to Leeroy’s art.
Leeroy New’s “Festive Fungi, Merry Mycelium” at Eastwood City along with other attractions including the Magical Christmas Carousel Garden at the 4th Level of Eastwood Mall and Neon Lights Display at the Eastwood Central Plaza is now open to mall patrons all throughout the Holiday Season.
You can also hop on Eastwood City’s very own Christmas Tram for a more unique way of exploring the different attractions and lighted installations spread across the township. You can also take photos, selfies, and videos at Eastwood City’s 40-ft. Christmas Tree within the Eastwood Mall Open Park.
