Even for the few people not familiar with the song, the powerful voice of Jennifer Hudson is enough to lure you in to the captivating trailer of Cats, a musical fantasy film based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical of the same name.
Cats circles around the Jellicles cat tribe who gather to decide which cat will ascend and return to a new life. To date it is fourth-longest running show on Broadway with 7,485 performances, and sixth-longest running show in London’s West End with 8,949 performances.
As mentioned, American Idol veteran Jennifer Hudson is part of the powerhouse cast alongside other musically-inclined actors such as James Corden, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, as well as singers Taylor Swift and Jason Derulo.
The film was introduce Francesca Hayward in her feature-film debut; Hayward is a principal ballerina in London’s Royal Ballet and has played significant roles such as both Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, and most recently Giselle in Giselle.
Cats is directed by Tom Hooper, the same man who helmed Les Miserables, and choreographed by Hamilton‘s Andy Blankenbuehler. But that’s not what everyone is talking about, it’s the cats, well… watch the trailer above and you’ll understand why.
