Disney has announced that R&B singer Halle Bailey of duo Chloe X Halle will portray the iconic role of Ariel in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Upon releasing the news, people were quick to share their thoughts on the Internet about Bailey’s casting.
Many misread the announcement by Disney as “Halle Berry” being casted as the red-haired mermaid. But even the Catwoman star pointed out the mistake and had her say on her namesake nabbing the role:
I can't be the only person who saw news that "Halle Bailey is The Little Mermaid" and got very confused because my mind misspelled her last name to make it read "Halle Berry is The Little Mermaid," right?

Bailey posted on her duo’s Twitter account an image of Ariel from the 1989 film, with her appearance changed to look as if she was the one as the iconic mermaid. Some thought that her casting would cause problems as the original Ariel was white and red-haired, but it seems people are celebrating:
I just know that Halle Bailey is going to be an amazing Ariel in The Little Mermaid remake.
Her vocals are outstanding and amazing – imagine what her singing Part of Your World is going to sound like. pic.twitter.com/ao7yUHjh0r

While a couple of bitter people argued the origins of Ariel date back to Hans Christian Andersen’s story (who is from Denmark), and cited the 1989 Ariel’s appearance, many argued that the casting doesn’t matter as Ariel is a mermaid – as long as the actress can sing well, she would fit into the role.
Even Zendaya, who many assumed would be the primary selection for Ariel, chipped in her excitement for Bailey’s casting:
Yeeeeessss!! Here for thiiiissss!! @chloexhalle ♥️♥️🙌🏽🙌🏽 https://t.co/8hpuSKb4rD
