The year 2019 is undeniably the year of sustainable fashion. From clothes made of plant-derived materials such as orange and pineapple to 100% recyclable sneakers, options are pouring in to help both producers and consumers be kinder to the environment.
Footwear brand Sperry is catching up on this movement to sustainability. Enter the BIONIC shoes, the brand’s very own sustainable sneakers made from plastic bottles.
The new release from Sperry, a brand that’s born from the sea, is made in partnership with Sip PH, Save Philippine Seas, BIONIC, and WaterKeeper Alliance, all of which are organizations that keep or recover plastic from the ocean.
The line consists of slip-ons, lace-up sneakers, and a performance sneakers. Each of the six shoes in the collection is woven from an average of five plastic bottles.
The sustainable collection is part of the brand’s move to combat plastic pollution in the ocean. “When you pick up a pair of Sperry BIONIC shoes, you help break the cycle of plastic pollution worldwide,” the brand says in an Instagram post.
