All eyes were glued to the TV screens as the final season of Emmy-winning fantasy series Game of Thrones premiered on HBO on April 15, 9 AM. As shown in previously released trailers, Jon Snow has returned to Winterfell with Daenerys Targaryen after calling a “truce” with Cersei Lannister in the season seven finale.
In true celebratory that the late King Robert Baratheon would be proud of, SKYcable (SKY) hosted a viewing party at Johnnie Walker House in Poblacion, Makati. In attendance were some representatives from the local cable company, invited colleagues, and members of the press.
The viewing party was a joint effort between SKY and HBO, the television channel behind the hit series based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. “HBO gives us the promotional rights, and we come up with the event. So far, the partnership has been going on for over 20 years, even last year we’ve done a lot of things that they we’re super happy with,” says Mico Marco, content manager for SKY.
The event itself was a success with its good turnout, including cosplayers going as Daenerys and the Night King – truly ice and fire in form. Laid out on the breakfast buffet were Filipino favorites with Game of Thrones-inspired names such as beef tapa as Robert’s Beef, bangus belly as Blackfish Belly, steamed vegetables as Highgarden’s Harvest, and fried rice as Grain of Thrones.
A simultaneous viewing party was being held at the same at the Dolphy Theater in ABS-CBN, and over the weekend the “Fire Or Ice: A Musical Spectacle” was held at SM Skating Rink in Megamall performed by Sofia Guidote and Joel Minas.
The cable company is currently thinking about hosting another viewing party for the series finale, which will be on May 20. According to Marco they usually only do one for the premiere. All the same, the Johnnie Walker House was a perfect venue to host a Game of Thrones viewing party as the whiskey recently released a limited edition entitled “White Walker,” in reference to the villainous undead in the series.
Marco and the rest of the people in their company do not know themselves how the series will be ending, as they show each episodes in real time as the United States; SKY receives their HBO feeds from Singapore, who gives them the cut version as the series is R-13. “People think we’re ‘held to secrecy’, but actually none of them know. Even I think some of the cast members don’t even know,” shared Marco.
On a personal note, Marco is siding with Daenerys to sit on the Iron Throne when the series ends and Jon will journey up north to explore more wide unknowns in the Lands of Always Winter. “And Cersei will die,” he adds. While waiting for the much-anticipated ending, SKY subscribers can also have the chance to travel to Northern Ireland where the series was shot, simply by joining in it’s flyway promo.
The final season has dropped and the war for survival begins. Will Jon and Daenerys be able to fend off the Night King and his army of undead? Will Cersei still be sitting on the Iron Throne, if not then who? Most importantly, will we ever get over this fantastic series ending? Only time can tell, and maybe Bran as the Three-Eyed Raven. We can only wait for winter to come. Valar Morghulis.
