After months of searching and hosting several auditions, ABS-CBN has finally found the right one to play the titular role of original Pinay superhero based on Mars Ravelo’s story — Darna.
Through an article on ABS-CBN News, Wednesday, July 17, ABS-CBN Films managing director Olivia Lamasan announced that 20-year-old Jane de Leon is the actress who bagged the role out of 300 celebrities who auditioned.
“Yung Darna story natin ngayon is a genesis story, a coming of age. Ang requirement talaga is somebody na young and with an air of innocence but at the same time a strength of character,” Lamasan said.
She also said that choosing de Leon as a new Darna was “a unanimous decision.”
“Natuwa nga ako na isa siya sa mga nag-audition. Sabi ko ay there’s something about her. Pati si Direk Lauren (Dyogi) said there’s something about her. Bilang filmmakers, may nakikita kami,” Lamasan shared. “Malakas ang instinct ng bata.”
De Leon is a Star Magic talent who had appeared in different teleseryes before. She portrayed the role of Maggie Bartolome in “Halik” and had been part of 2017 fantasy series “La Luna Sangre.”
It can be recalled that after Angel Locsin dropped the Darna project, young actress Liza Soberano took it. However, she too had to back out due to some medical reasons.
Looking back, aside from Locsin other legendary actresses who bagged this role are Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, and Marian Rivera.
This Darna “genesis story” will be helmed by award-winning director Jerrold Tarog. The brilliant mind behind box-office hit films such as “Heneral Luna,” “Goyo: Ang Batang General,” and “Sana Dati.”
