The live-action remake of Disney classic The Lion King arrives in theaters next week, but we already feel how great the movie will be thanks to a new song released by Queen B herself, Beyoncé, who voices Nala in the film.
The song entitled “Spirit” is the first song from a new album which Beyoncé is curating for The Lion King, namely The Lion King: The Gift. But this won’t be your typical Beyoncé album, she calls it ‘sonic cinema… a new experience of storytelling.’
“It is a mixture of genres and collaboration that isn’t one sound. It is influenced by everything from R&B, pop, hip hop and Afro Beat,” said Beyoncé in a statement, ensuring that it wasn’t just a collection of songs inspired by the film, but a way to ‘put everyone on their own journey.’
“Spirit” is a very good example of Beyoncé paying homage to African culture, much like the iconic song “The Circle of Life”. “Spirit” begins with Swahili chants that translate to “long live the king”, then switches to Beyoncé belting out an inspiring ballad backed by a gospel-like choir.
The song, like Beyoncé herself, is as heavenly as it sounds, and will play at a ‘pivotal scene for Nala.’ Our favorite line? “Watch the light lift your heart up, burn your flame through the night.”
