Still not over Game of Thrones ending? Netflix has come to the rescue with a new series about warring kingdoms, only with an Oriental twist. Instead of knights and lords, it will have the fighting samurai of feudal Japan. Entitled Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan, this docu-drama will focus on warlords fighting to rule Japan.
According to Deadline, the show will tell the story of the legendary ‘One-Eyed Dragon’, a samurai named Date Masamune. Masamune fought alongside the Japan’s three founding father, themselves warriors who led samurai armies in wars centuries ago.
Masamune has a pretty badass history – as a child he plucked out his own eye, murdered his younger brother to make sure he was the only heir upon succeeding his father at the age of 17, and conquered neighboring clans in Northern Japan under his control – he is also thought to have inspired the design for Darth Vader’s helmet!
As a docu-drama, Age of Samurai will be done through a stylized drama that pays homage to Japanese art and graphic novels. Shooting has already begun in Japan, the United States, and Canada, and is set to arrive on Netflix later this year.
