The hit fantasy TV show Game of Thrones will be having its final season this April 2019. A lot of us are getting our tissues ready for what we expect will be an epic finale. The show based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire has been with HBO since 2011, and creators David Benioff & D.B. Weiss has served us well.
But all is not lost with Game of Thrones coming to an end, because HBO is already working on a prequel series, set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones! While the latter focuses on the warring families in Westeros and beyond, the prequel series will be taking place during the Age of Heroes.
In the history of Westeros, the Age of Heroes was a time where notable individuals of the First Men founded the great houses we know today, such as Bran the Builder who founded House Stark, and Lann the Clever, the founder of House Lannister. The two founders have very interesting legends in how their ancient houses began, and we are hoping HBO will be covering them in the much-awaited series.
The biggest event that happened during the Age of Heroes was the Long Night, the so-called winter war between the First Men and Children of the Forest (who you may remember from Seasons 4 and 6 of Game of Thrones) against the White Walkers. This was the first arrival of the Walkers, even before the impending war of the upcoming final season, and the Long Night prompted Bran the Builder to build the Wall and drive the Walkers back.
Naturally we are all excited because of the many stories that the prequel series could cover, from the Long Night to First Men legends. Though Benioff and Weiss will not be around this time, the show will be headed by Jane Goldman, with the assistance of George R.R. Martin. It is unlikely that any of the characters we are familiar with will show up in this new series, but casting has already begun and some big names have been included such as Oscar-nominee Naomi Watts (21 Grams, The Impossible) and Josh Whitehouse (Poldark).
Some of the other castings include up-and-coming actors such as Georgie Henley (Lucy Pevensie from The Chronicles of Narnia series), Jamie Campbell Bower (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Toby Regbo (also from Crimes of Grindelwald), Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth, Star Wars Episode IX), and Ivanno Jeremiah (Humans). Other castings include Denise Gough (Colette), Sheila Atim (Harlots), and Alex Sharp (How to Talk to Girls at Parties).
There’s so much to look forward to in the prequel series, we almost forget that Game of Thrones is ending. We hope it won’t take long for HBO to produce the new series, because we can’t imagine a world without anything Game of Thrones-related popping up every year. We can’t wait!
