Resident Evil, the zombie-apocalypse game that started it all, is giving its second installment a new look. Aside from better graphics, Resident Evil 2’s remake has been reimagined by its developers for a smoother gameplay and story flow. New elements have also been introduced in the game and here’s a quick primer on what you need to do to survive.
1. Get All the Loot
When it comes to survival-horror games, you have to get what you can, as much as you can. So if you come across boxes of ammo, health sprays, or other key items, don’t be afraid to get them all. You’ll soon realize that even wooden boards (SPOILER!) sprawled about the map has a good use to help you keep alive throughout the game.
Staying true to the original RE2, the remake still has a puzzle element about the game that requires players to solve different obstacles in order to advance. There are some that are real brain teasers but don’t worry; there are clues scattered about in the form of notes or memos. Just keep a sharp eye out and collect as much as you can.
3. Don’t Panic, Go Organic
A new feature in the game is an additional herb. Loyal players of the franchise know that these herbs are crucial when health levels are low. This time, they can more than just health. If you happen to chance upon blue herb, mix it with a red herb to activate your character’s adrenaline rush that will give them a boost in damage as well as immunity from it for a short period of time.
4. Stay Sharp
Seasoned players of Resident Evil know that it’s best to listen carefully to the background music to determine whether creatures are within your range. But in the remake, you can’t let your guard down. The background music won’t alert you if something’s coming or near you. The only time you can relax is at a save room because the atmosphere exhibits a relief from the usual tense setting.
5. If All Else Fails, Run!
When your luck has run out and so did your bullets, don’t attempt to fight stronger creatures using sub-weapons like the combat knife. The best way to survive them is to run for your life. Know when to fight back and know when to back down. Just make sure that you’re loaded up with gear when you’re nearing a boss fight.
The original Resident Evil 2 was released in 1998. It was developed and published by Capcom to be played on the Playstation. The game’s producer, Tsuyoshi Kanda, and the team wanted to preserve the original story while polishing it to making it more immersive.
They retained the survival-adventure elements and reverted back to the horrific nature of the game through detailed creatures and more intense jumpscares.
Players, new and old, will be taken back to the original setting of RE2: the Raccoon City Police Station but with a damper and darker atmosphere.
They now also have the chance choose between playing as Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield. There are limitations to each character as well as a unique story flow. In addition, veterans of the game will rejoice knowing that they don’t need an ink ribbon to save the game in standard mode. The use of the ribbon will only be available in hard mode.
Resident Evil 2 Remake will be released on January 25, 2019. It will be available to play on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.
