First came the memes. Now, it’s nostalgia.
As if Thank U, Next couldn’t be more epic, Ariana Grande just dropped the music video for the song, bringing back memories from the 2000s through a re-enactment of iconic movie scenes from that era. She packs it in a video three minutes and 26 seconds long.
Let’s break it down by movie, shall we?
Childhood dreams do come true and for Grande, it’s recreating scenes from the film Mean Girls. She dresses up as Regina George, carrying a Burn Book of her own and spending her days with the Plastics– Cady, Karen, and Gretchen. What’s more epic? Stars from the original movie Jonathan Bennett (who played Aaron Samuels) and Stefanie Drummond (who played the girl Regina punched in the face) made a cameo right when the music video started. That sexy Winter Talent Show may have just defeated Grande’s song, “Santa Tell Me.”
Bring It On
Grande was clearly in it to win it when she made the video for Thank U, Next. Not only did she sport a cheerleader’s outfit, she also did this iconic scene of Torrance from Bring It On. Yep, you remember it correctly. It’s the teeth-brushing and dancing battle scene. Other notable scenes were Grande’s half-time cheer-off between the Toros and Clovers, as well as her Rancho Carne Toros dance routine.
Reese Witherspoon is not the only person that could nail an Elle Woods portrayal. That was crystal clear in the music video, where at one point, Grande arrived at school in an all-pink outfit. She also recreated the scene where Elle was studying “Immigration and Refugee Law and Policy” while lounging in her lawn. Casual, right? She’s got that orange Mac Book, too. Jennifer Coolidge, who played Paulette in the original movie, also made a cameo appearance. She joined Grande in a hair salon to talk about boy problems.
13 Going On 30
Grande can channel Jennifer Garner from the rom-com 13 Going on 30, too. Is there anything she can’t do? The singer-songwriter plays Jenna Rink, the 13-year-old turned magazine editor overnight. Some of the scenes from the film include the signature dollhouse, where she let a tear or two fall, as well as Grande in a wedding dress with her bridesmaids.
