While going back to school as an adult has some uptakes, it’s never not unnerving. Even if you have preconceived ideas about how things would roll, it’s always tough to start something life-changing and play the balance game at the same time.

Adult learners don’t have the luxury of time as young students do, so everything is a bit harder to manage. However, this doesn’t mean you should let life get ahead of you. Check out these five tips to align your work-life-school situation like a pro:

1. Lists, lists, listsAlright, lists and pads always seem intimidating, but you should not fear them! The key to stop feeling overwhelmed by the mountain of tasks (that never stop coming) is to break them down into bits and pieces that make sense for you. For example, if you’re sacked with homework or readings, don’t try to get it all done in one sitting. Maybe try doing it little by little, so you don’t get burned out easily.

2. Use different resources

Since you’re not just focusing on just studying anymore, it’s even more important to try more methods to absorb lectures aside from just jotting down notes. You can try taking photos or even videos of classes if that works for you, so you can have something to review later along with the rest of the materials.

3. Allow yourself to adjust
It’s a simple concept, but not everyone has a firm grasp of it: take the time to fine-tune your skills with new surroundings. Nothing’s ever set even if you’ve had years of experience in life or work, so be kind to yourself especially during the beginning of classes.

4. Develop a study habit that suits you
This may be tricky, since you’ve got a lot of things competing for your attention. Nevertheless, it’s not impossible. Find a study sanctuary somewhere in your house and set up shop at a time you prefer. If you have housemates, you can just talk them into giving you more opportunities to do schoolwork or prep for sessions.

5. Allot a day for rest
Helen Hayes once said, “If you rest, you rust.” Well, that’s not the case for most people. A good day of just stretching and sleeping will do wonders for a whole crazy week in front of you! Taking a breather does plenty of good to your health, too.
