If you and your friends still can’t decide where to spend the weekend, hear us: Ditch the malls. Escolta Block Party is the place to be.
A gathering of creatives, collaborators, and enthusiasts, the quarterly event is a celebration of the past, present, and future of the “Queen of Streets” AKA Escolta. It’s also an opportunity to dive into the local music and art scene, while meeting friends, old and new.
From talks and community-themed sessions during the day to cool, independent music to dance to at night, the seventh edition (and second anniversary) of this street party is expected to highlight the re-imagination of Manila’s former business district. It’s also a platform for small-scale businesses so be prepared to discover the good stuff.
Here’s your ultimate guide to this weekend’s Escolta Block Party.
Christmas Donation Drive
When: Unspecified time
First things first: Party with a purpose. On the day of the Escolta Block Party, there will be a Christmas donation drive to gather new and pre-loved items for the street kids and families in the area. Bring clothes, shoes, houseware, books, blankets, pillows, toys, and school supplies that you’re not using anymore but are still in good condition. It’s the least we can do to give back to the Escolta community.
Live By Design Talks
When: 12:30 PM
Where: First United Building
Fee: P200 for Early Bird Reservation; P300 Door Charge for Walk Ins
“What kind of dynamics do we build between our bodies and the pieces that we wear?” In The Manila Creative Exchange’s Live By Design talks, fashion designer Carl Jan Cruz, fashion photographer Koji Arboleda, as well as representatives of contemporary fashion label Proudrace will tackle how clothes affect an individual’s overall way of living.
Pedx: a series of visioning exercises on democratizing public spaces
When: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
For urban design junkies, One Zero Design Co. has something for you. Featuring the work of UST students Alanisse Chua, Michael Angelo M. Reyes, and Julia de Santos, this round of Pedx exhibits and discusses “Metro Manila Skyways as a continuous network of pedestrian expressways.” It also looks into the possibility of a “pedestrian programming that enables free movement, introduces new public spaces, and consolidates street design” given the current skeleton.
When: 1:00 PM
Where: Kalsada Coffee, First United Building
If you think you know coffee enough just because you drink it every single day, think again. Did you know that coffee can be fermented? If not, Kalsada and Coffee Science Philippines’ upcoming Coffee Science Meetup called “Cafe Buro” is the perfect time for you to learn the science behind coffee fermentation and its relationship with flavor.
Colors of Manila
When: 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Where: Escolta, Quiapo, Binondo districts
Fee: P999 (Escolta Block Party special rate)
While we can always rely on The Den and Fred’s Revolucion for food and drinks, Manila For A Day’s Colors of Manila will take you on a totally different gastronomic experience. Get a taste of food from the market and Halal food district, all while touring the areas listed in the itinerary. Slots are limited so hurry and sign up ASAP.
When: 8:00 PM
This weekend’s Escolta Block Party is twice the fun as the peeps from Poblacion are joining in the festivities. Interested in joining Bathala Na, Hit The Road Kat, Samba School, Imperatriz Filipinense, Lolo’s Polo, and Smoothie Booze in Pineapple Lab’s Pineapple Jam? Send a video of your performance and you might just be included in the lineup.
When: ‘Til 12 midnight
Presented by MAFK and The Twelfth House, dance the night away at Escolta Groove with Top 40 hits and disco pop mixes from DJs Tolo Maravillas, Major Chie, Mike Lavet, and Gian Gang Bang.
When: 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Where: E.T. Yuchengco Laneway
Recolor Yuchengco may not be happening at the heart of Escolta, but this collaboration of students, local government, and artist Kris Abrigo aims to “influence future public spaces to move from traditional and utilitarian spaces to vibrant and active places.” Join this cause by showing up at the launch event and helping in the painting process.
