Right when the contouring ala Kim Kardashian trend took off, there’s been no stopping the highlighting obsession. It’s partly because the two go hand in hand and because having blindingly glowy cheeks make the look 100 times better.

You can choose from a variety of formula: cream, liquid, pure pigment, powder, baked, among many others. With the season of sparkle and glitter fast approaching, here’s what you can do to make that highlight pop even more.

Prioritize skin care

A glowy base largely depends on a skincare routine targeted to achieving the glow. Before proceeding to using the skincare products that already works well on your skin, exfoliate to remove dead skin cells. Apply a drop or two of a glow-enhancing serum and massage all over the face. Seal it all with your favorite moisturizer.

Befriend a glow primer

A primer does not just help in the longevity of your makeup look, it also performs a specific function. Bringing that glow is one of ’em. Think the OG MAC Strobing Cream and you’ll know what we mean. Right after your skincare, put on the primer, focusing on the high points of your face such as the nose, cheekbone, cupid’s bow, and nose bridge.

Mist your brush

Watching beauty gurus slather themselves in highlighter automatically means wetting their brush with a mist or a setting spray before dipping into their face palettes. It picks up more product and applies a beam of glow at one swipe. This is especially true with powder formulas and pure pigments.

Apply with fingers

Believe it or not, fingers can pack on pigment and shine better than some brushes do. It’s especially true for cream and liquid highlighters. The heat coming from your fingers helps make the product look more skin-like yet blinding. Apply these with a patting motion to avoid disturbing any makeup that’s already in your face.

Layering is fine

Have you seen Bretman Rock or Jeffree Star do a single swipe of their favorite highlighters? Never. Keep swiping that fan brush back and forth because layering is totally fine. Bold makeup looks go well with an intense highlight anyway, so don’t hold back the glow.
