It has been 20 years since Westlife first blessed us with bops, ballads, and #SmoothAF harmonies. To this day, we still fall head-over-heels with their hit songs such as “Swear It Again,” “If I Let You Go,” “My Love,” “Flying Without Wings,” and more.
The band’s lead singer, Shane Filan, recently stopped by for a two-night concert here in the country. He performed his own singles, Westlife’s best hits, and remarkably, a cover of NSync’s “This I Promise You.” Lucky us, bes, napanood namin siya live. This flood of much-welcomed nostalgia reminds us of all the band’s notable covers. Hear some of them.
A Billy Joel original from 1983, “Uptown Girl” is a “downtown,” working-class man’s song to pursue a wealthy, “uptown” girl. Isama na rin siguro natin ‘yung pagsibak ng kahoy at pag-igib ng tubig. And y’all know that boybands (fangirls, alam natin ‘yan) love to serenade, so Westlife taking on this song makes perfect sense.
Seasons In The Sun
Whoever did not feel joy or fun while listening to Westlife’s cover of “Seasons In The Sun” by Jacques Brel is missing some Vitamin D. ‘Yang tataa, bes? This song became a Christmas number one single in the UK in 1999 and is the ultimate sing-along for the (young-at-heart) squad and the fambam.
We swear whoever Mandy is, she’s one lucky girl. Imagine five (hindi pa ume-exit si Bryan McFadden at the time, bes) attractive and talented guys singing, “I need you,” while belting high notes. Kilig, right? The band’s cover of this Barry Manilow song is considered the single with the longest leap to the top of charts in UK music history. From number 200 to number 1 real quick, mumsh.
You Raise Me Up
Hindi lang puro love song ang alam ng Westlife, okay? They know how to nail a song that talks about spirituality and true happiness. Whether you’re a believer or not—we don’t judge, beshie— the song’s timeless message will always hit us right in the heart. The band’s version of the song is the only one to reach the top of the charts. We still love your version, though, Josh Groban.
I Have A Dream
Mamma mia! Westlife’s version of “I Have A Dream” by ABBA sounds like heaven. This cover is a co-release along with “Seasons In The Sun” in December 1999 and is considered their fourth number one single in the UK. Way to go, boys! And we believe in angels, too. They’re living in this world through Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, and Nicky Byrne. Sama na rin natin si kuyang Brian McFadden—our forever first crushes.
