Getting a business up and running is no easy feat. Let alone establishing a fashion brand of your own in an industry so cut-throat, you’d probably bail out yourself. As Heidi Klum likes to put it, “In fashion, one day you’re in and the next day, you’re out.” Point taken, mareng Heidi.
But while it’s good to keep reality in check, the dreamer inside all of us always prevail. We turn to fashion designer and stylist-to-the-stars Bang Pineda. At the backstage of his recent fashion show at stylefestph, we ask him for wise words on kick-starting your own brand. Take note, fashion rookies.
As a 41-year-old who designs streetwear for the young, Pineda stresses the importance of constant learning. “The way I comprehend with the youngsters is I study how they work streetwear,” he says. He says traveling also gives him much-needed inspiration for his designs. Bongga!
Have a vision
Pineda considers vision as the “make-it-or-break-it” factor in putting up a fashion brand. “You need to have a vision para malaman mo ’yung gusto mo and at the same time, malaman mo rin ’yung goal mo for your brand,” he explains. Oo nga naman. When you know what you want, you know you’ll go for it, ’di ba?
Do things with a “bang”
Figuratively siyempre, mumsh. True to his name, Pineda encourages young designers to make a statement. YOLO, ’di ba? “Be fearless,” he says. “Don’t be afraid of the reality and expressing it through your designs.”
Believe in your craft
For the designer, believing in your own craft is important. “That comes first and foremost, especially for those who are still starting out,” he says. When everyone else thinks your idea will fail, self-belief can propel you forward. Laban lang!
When asked about his success in the industry, the 41-year-old designer says happiness is key. “Not everything is within our control so always make sure to enjoy what you are doing. Everything will just follow,” he says. “That’s the secret.”
