The long, crazy wait is over! The first official teaser trailer for the movie adaptation of the best-selling novel Crazy Rich Asians is finally out to get fans excited. While we get less than 20 seconds of footage, it surely gave a glimpse of how grand the film will be.
The teaser starts off with Constance Wu’s character, Rachel Chu, rolling up to a huge mansion in Singapore. Her boyfriend, Nick Young (played by Henry Golding), walks out in an elegant white tux, prompting Rachel’s friend Goh Peik Lin (Akwafina) to say, “Damn Rachel, he’s like the Asian Bachelor.” A series of quick shots showing the lavish lifestyle of Nick’s family follows, complete with fireworks, sports cars, and grand parties. The clip ends with Rachel telling Nick that he should’ve said that he’s like the Prince William of Asia. “That’s completely ridiculous. I’m much more of a Harry,” Nick replies.
Crazy Rich Asians is an adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s book of the same name. It revolves around an American-born Chinese professor Rachel Chu and her boyfriend Nick Young, who lives a low-key life as a professor in the same school. When she accompanies him to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding, she gets thrust into the lives of Asia’s rich and famous. She also finds out that Nick is from a ridiculously wealthy family with a dark past.
The full trailer will be released on Monday, April 23, with the film slated for theatrical release on August 17. The film also stars Harry Shum, Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, and Ken Jeong.
