Han Solo’s farewell in Star Wars: The Force Awakens left many fans bawling but it seems there’s no reason to shed tears. His goodbye was only temporary as he is telling his story in the stand-alone feature film Solo: A Star Wars Story.
The new Star Wars film is described as a “Western crossed with a film noir, freighted with offbeat humor and set in the criminal underbelly of a galaxy being torn apart.” To put it simply, it’s “a heist, gunslinger type movie,” according to Kathleen Kennedy, president of the film’s production company, Lucasfilm.
Apart from teaser clips, stills, and comments from filmmakers, there’s really not much information about the movie. What we do know, though, we’ve listed below:
1. It features the young Han Solo.
Alden Ehrenreich, star of other films like Blue Jasmine, Stoker, and Beautiful Creatures, is taking on a challenging role as young Han in this story. It takes place several years before the events of 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope. A role made phenomenal by Harrison Ford, and his will always be big shoes to fill.
2. Han’s skills will be tested.
As always, Han’s skills will be put to the test — this time, as a wannabe smuggler stealing something (we’re not sure yet what but we’re definitely dying to know) from on board The Conveyex, the roller coaster-esque train we got a peek of in the trailer.
3. Han’s character might be like that of any young man – to live with purpose and to be respected.
Kennedy also gave some insight on Han’s character: “He might be a little more immature, he may be a little less experienced, and he may hone his cynicism over time, but he’s very wary,” she says. “He needs to gain the respect of the people he interacts with, even if they’re the lowest of the low.”
4. He’s got great company.
We’ll be able to see Han Solo’s iconic friendship with Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) blossoming from the early stages, a potential romance with the mysterious Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke), run-ins with Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover), and meet his very own droid L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge).
5. There will be bad blood with villains, too.
Han Solo will meet crooks in Solo: A Star Wars Story. These characters will be Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), Val (Thandie Newton), and crime boss Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany). He’s always been quite the mercenary throughout the galaxy — but we know he’s a good guy deep down. The movie, however, will be about figuring out who’s good and who’s bad. “I think that’s exactly what Han’s trying to do throughout the film,” Ehrenreich says.
